Iowa Welcomes Home 145 National Guard Soldiers from Middle East Deployment
DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) –
A wave of relief and pride swept through Iowa as 145 brave soldiers from the Iowa National Guard returned home this week, concluding their deployment in the Middle East. These dedicated service members are among the many who have served with distinction in a critical region.
The returning troops were part of a larger contingent, numbering over 1,800, who have been deployed since May 2025. Their mission was integral to Operation Inherent Resolve, a vital counter-terrorism effort aimed at stabilizing Iraq and Syria. Approximately 200 soldiers had previously returned from this challenging mission, marking a gradual but steady homecoming for our forces.
The deployment was not without its profound sacrifices. In a somber reminder of the dangers faced, two Iowa National Guard soldiers tragically lost their lives in December 2025 during Operation Inherent Resolve. Staff Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, and Staff Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown, were killed in an attack by an ISIS gunman. Their ultimate sacrifice will forever be remembered by a grateful nation.
While many have returned, approximately 350 Iowa National Guard soldiers continue their deployment in the Middle East, upholding their commitment to global security. Their unwavering dedication ensures the ongoing success of the mission.
A formal welcome home ceremony is anticipated for the returning soldiers next week, though specific details are yet to be announced. This event will provide an opportunity for families, friends, and the entire community to express their profound gratitude and admiration for their service.
