Iran has sent conflicting signals regarding potential peace talks with the United States, with a senior Iranian official stating Tehran is “positively reviewing” participation, even as earlier reports indicated no plans for a new round of discussions. This comes after the US seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship, further escalating tensions in the region.

Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for the Iranian foreign ministry, accused the US of “clear violations of the ceasefire,” citing the attack on the Iranian cargo ship, the naval blockade on Iranian ports, and delays in implementing a ceasefire in Lebanon. Despite Iran’s reservations, a US delegation, reportedly led by Vice President JD Vance, is proceeding to Islamabad for scheduled negotiations. US President Donald Trump has also issued stern warnings, threatening to destroy Iranian civilian infrastructure if a deal is not reached.

The strategic Strait of Hormuz remains a key point of contention. After a brief reopening, Iran effectively closed the strait again, only to reopen it partially for “friendly” nations, while demanding the right to impose tolls – a demand rejected by the US. The US, in turn, has maintained its naval blockade on Iranian ports, leading to a surge in global energy prices. China has expressed concern over the US’s “forcible interception” of the Iranian vessel, which Iran described as “armed piracy.”

Meanwhile, the fragile Israel-Lebanon ceasefire continues to face challenges, with reports of Israeli forces demolishing homes and establishing a “security buffer zone” in southern Lebanon, actions that Iran has cited as ceasefire violations. Despite these tensions, Israeli and Lebanese representatives have held talks in Washington, aiming for a permanent security and peace agreement.

Amidst these diplomatic and military maneuvers, Iran continues to experience an internet blackout, now in its 52nd day. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for de-escalation while emphasizing the need for vigilance against external threats. Separately, Iran has executed two individuals accused of involvement in a “spy network linked to Israel.”
