TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei has emphasized that Lebanon and the cessation of hostilities in the Arab nation are an inseparable component of the understanding reached between Iran and the United States.

Key Role of Lebanon in Iran-US Understanding

Speaking at a weekly press conference on Monday, Baqaei highlighted the profound significance of the finalized Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and the US. This agreement aims to conclude military confrontations on all fronts, including Lebanon, and was achieved through steadfast resilience against what he described as two malicious actors.

Response to Zionist Regime’s Aggression

Addressing the ongoing attacks by the Zionist regime against Lebanon and Iran’s subsequent response, the spokesman revealed that these aggressions, including crimes perpetrated in Beirut’s southern suburbs, occurred precisely as efforts to finalize the understanding were peaking.

Maximizing National Interests

Baqaei asserted that all decisions are made following a precise and comprehensive evaluation of Iran’s national interests. He further stated that it would become evident over time how the Israeli regime’s terrorist actions ultimately served to maximize the national interests of both Iran and Lebanon.

He added that future generations would recognize that Iran and its allies successfully prevented the Israeli regime’s actions from disrupting efforts to secure the interests of Iran and Lebanon. Instead, these actions ultimately strengthened the cohesion of the Axis of Resistance against the Zionist regime.

Lebanon’s Explicit Mention in the MoU

The spokesperson reiterated that Lebanon and the termination of the war in the country are an integral part of the war-ending understanding between Iran and the US. He affirmed Iran’s unwavering determination and seriousness on this matter, pledging continued careful monitoring of developments.

Regarding specific references to Lebanon within the memorandum, Baqaei disclosed that the word “Lebanon” appears three times in the text. He clarified that the MoU explicitly addresses ending the war in a manner that encompasses Lebanon, emphasizing respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The framework of commitments, he added, has been clearly defined.

International Mediation and Agreement Details

These statements follow an announcement by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who confirmed a peace deal between Iran and the US after weeks of negotiations facilitated by Pakistan, with support from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. According to Sharif, the agreement mandates the immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, and is slated for formal signing in Switzerland on June 19.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi later corroborated the finalization of the MoU. He noted that Tehran had successfully integrated its key positions into the document and would verify the implementation of US commitments before engaging in further negotiations. Gharibabadi indicated that the agreement includes the lifting of the US naval blockade and outlines a phased approach towards broader discussions on sanctions relief, reconstruction, and other pertinent issues.

Subsequently, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council announced that the finalized MoU would bring an end to war and military operations across all fronts. It also stipulated that future negotiations would only commence after the other side fulfills its commitments. An informed source further revealed that Iran’s proposed final amendments included provisions concerning the management of the Strait of Hormuz and guarantees for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
