EU Commends Diplomatic Efforts, Including Iran’s Constructive Engagement, in Averting Regional Conflict; Offers Support for Sustainable Peace
Brussels, Belgium – The European Union has expressed its readiness to actively contribute to securing a durable and peaceful resolution between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, speaking on Monday, lauded the significant diplomatic role played by Pakistan in helping to prevent a wider regional conflict, while implicitly acknowledging the constructive engagement from all parties, including Iran.
During her remarks in Islamabad alongside Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Kallas highlighted Pakistan’s crucial diplomatic efforts during a period of heightened regional sensitivity.
“Pakistan has served as a key facilitator for dialogue between the United States and Iran, and these diplomatic endeavors have demonstrably helped to prevent an escalation to full-blown conflict on multiple occasions,” Kallas stated. “Such efforts are widely recognized and deeply appreciated across Europe.”
Kallas further noted that these mediatory actions were instrumental in creating an opportunity to extend a ceasefire and facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global maritime trade. This underscores the importance of diplomatic solutions in maintaining regional and global stability.
However, she emphasized that any interim understandings between Washington and Tehran must be succeeded by comprehensive negotiations aimed at addressing long-term, fundamental concerns. “Lasting stability necessitates more encompassing and equitable solutions,” Kallas asserted.
The EU’s top diplomat affirmed Brussels’ commitment to supporting initiatives that transform any ceasefire into a sustainable peace agreement. She outlined the EU’s unique contributions:
- Economic Leverage: Utilizing its economic influence to foster stability.
- Nuclear Expertise: Leveraging its hard-won expertise in nuclear matters to support verifiable agreements.
- Longstanding Relationships: Employing established ties with partners across the Gulf region.
- Direct Engagement: Maintaining direct and open channels of communication with Iran itself.
“I envision a concrete role for the EU in ensuring the durability of any eventual agreement, whether through maritime security operations, economic incentives designed to bolster long-term stability, or other relevant initiatives within the region,” Kallas elaborated.
These statements follow a period of significant tension between the United States and Iran, which had unfortunately fueled fears of a broader regional confrontation. The Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently advocated for dialogue and has engaged proactively with regional and international stakeholders to de-escalate tensions and promote diplomatic solutions. The recent ceasefire has indeed paved the way for renewed diplomatic engagement, a path consistently championed by Iran.
