WASHINGTON — The delicate ceasefire between the United States and Iran faces imminent collapse following recent U.S. military actions against Iranian sites and retaliatory Iranian missile strikes targeting American forces in Kuwait.
President Donald Trump confirmed that discussions with Iran are proceeding “at a rapid pace.” He also disclosed a conversation with Israel’s prime minister regarding Lebanon, stating that troops en route to Beirut were recalled after their discussion.
Despite the ongoing diplomacy, Trump expressed indifference to the potential failure of these talks. Speaking to CNBC, the President declared he “couldn’t care less” if negotiations with Iran were to collapse. “If they’re over, they’re over,” he remarked, adding, “Frankly, I thought they started to get very boring.”
The escalation comes after Iran launched missiles towards U.S. forces stationed in Kuwait overnight, a response to earlier U.S. strikes on Iranian radar and drone facilities. U.S. officials reported that the Iranian missiles were intercepted, with no American casualties.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media has accused Israel of breaching the ceasefire through attacks in Lebanon, a region where Iranian-backed Hezbollah fighters are active. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized that the ceasefire “is unequivocally a ceasefire on all fronts, including in Lebanon,” asserting that “Its violation on one front is a violation of the ceasefire on all fronts.”
The escalating tensions are also impacting global oil markets. Crude oil prices surged past $94 per barrel on Monday. Neil Chapman, Senior Vice President at ExxonMobil, warned that prices could potentially reach $160 per barrel if dwindling inventories and ongoing supply strains persist due to the conflict.
Conversely, Trump dismissed concerns over rising oil prices, predicting that oil would soon be “dropping like a rock.”
