This incendiary post, published on Truth Social on Saturday, has ignited widespread concern among experts. It comes at a particularly sensitive juncture, amidst ongoing, fragile negotiations aimed at achieving a more lasting ceasefire in the aggressive US-Israeli war against Iran. Such rhetoric, experts warn, carries the potential to severely destabilize an already volatile region, alienating both allies and adversaries alike.
The historical context of Washington’s interventions in the Middle East, notably the devastating 2003-2011 US invasion of Iraq, and the Trump administration’s relentless pursuit of increased influence abroad, lend a sinister undertone to this latest declaration. Professor Nasr sharply criticized Trump’s actions, stating on X: “First he declared he wanted to eradicate Iran’s civilisation now he is declaring that he wants to turn Iran into an American property.” He further emphasized, “It is this kind of grotesque behaviour that undermines diplomacy and unites Iranians in defence of their country.
