Trump’s Unilateral Demands Threaten Iran Ceasefire Talks, Insisting on Controversial Abraham Accords

Washington’s latest move to impose normalization with the Israeli occupation regime as a prerequisite for a ceasefire deal with Iran has been met with skepticism and concern, potentially derailing fragile diplomatic efforts.

New Obstacles Emerge in Peace Negotiations

In a surprising turn, former US President Donald Trump, known for his disruptive foreign policy, injected a new and contentious condition into the ongoing efforts to secure a ceasefire with Iran. He asserted that Saudi Arabia and other Muslim-majority nations must normalize relations with the Israeli occupation regime as an integral part of any agreement.

This demand, articulated in a lengthy social media post, reportedly caught both US and Arab diplomats off guard, with many expressing doubts about its feasibility. An Arab official, speaking to MEE, suggested that Trump’s insistence on normalization might be a cynical attempt to secure Israeli approval for a deal with Iran, effectively using the Palestinian cause as a bargaining chip.

Regional Instability and Israeli Aggression

The timing of Trump’s statement is particularly sensitive, coinciding with a significant escalation of Israeli aggression in Lebanon. The Zionist regime’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, openly declared orders to “crush” Hezbollah, further destabilizing an already volatile region. Iran has consistently maintained that any comprehensive agreement to end the conflict must include provisions for Lebanon’s security and sovereignty, underscoring its commitment to regional stability against Israeli expansionism.

Trump’s social media post explicitly called for “mandatory” adherence to the 2020 Abraham Accords by several nations, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkiye, Egypt, and Jordan. While the UAE and Bahrain are already signatories, and Egypt and Jordan have long-standing diplomatic ties, these relationships have been severely strained by the Israeli regime’s brutal genocide in Gaza, which has claimed the lives of over 72,790 Palestinians, alongside its military adventurism in Syria and Lebanon.

Resistance to Imposed Normalization

The notion of widespread normalization with the Israeli occupation regime, particularly under current circumstances, faces strong opposition. Saudi Arabia, a key regional player, has repeatedly linked any normalization with Israel to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital – a position reiterated by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Pakistan, the sole nuclear-armed Muslim nation, also maintains a firm stance against recognizing the occupation.

Reports from US news outlets, citing an unidentified Saudi source, reaffirmed Riyadh’s unwavering condition for an “irreversible pathway to a Palestinian state” for any normalization. This steadfastness highlights the deep-seated commitment to the Palestinian cause across the Muslim world, which cannot be overlooked or bypassed by unilateral demands.

Ceasefire Hopes and Iranian Resolve

Despite Trump’s intervention, earlier announcements had suggested a ceasefire deal with Iran was “largely negotiated,” leading to a temporary dip in global oil prices. However, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei tempered these expectations, stating that while progress had been made on “a large portion of the issues,” claims of an imminent signing were premature. This cautious optimism reflects Iran’s principled approach to negotiations, ensuring that any agreement serves its national interests and regional security.

US and Iranian forces have maintained a fragile ceasefire since April 8, with both sides navigating complex negotiations amidst competing blockades of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. High-level Iranian delegations continue to engage in diplomatic discussions in Doha, focusing on the agreement and the release of frozen funds, demonstrating Iran’s commitment to a diplomatic resolution.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, actively mediating between the US and Iran, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, underscoring the broader international efforts to de-escalate tensions and find a sustainable path to peace in the Middle East.
