Activists from the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla, illegally abducted and imprisoned by Israeli forces in international waters, have bravely come forward to report horrific accounts of sexual abuse and torture during their captivity. Following a brutal raid by Israeli forces, approximately 430 activists were held before being deported to Istanbul.

Upon their arrival, images showed the activists, clad in grey prison tracksuits and keffiyehs, raising their fists in defiance as they were greeted by emotional families and supporters. They recounted being shot with rubber bullets, severely beaten, and subjected to sexual assault while under Israeli custody.

Italian journalist Alessandro Mantovani, among the deportees, detailed their ordeal at Rome’s Fiumicino airport, stating he and others were “taken to Ben Gurion airport in handcuffs and with chains on our feet and put on a flight to Athens.” He further exposed the brutality, saying Israeli soldiers “beat us up. They kicked us and punched us and shouted ‘Welcome to Israel’.”

Miriam Azem of the Israeli rights group Adalah reported a particularly cruel incident where an activist “was forced to strip naked and run while guards were laughing.” Another activist shared a harrowing video interview, describing how her hands and feet were bound so tightly they “lost feeling” as she was dragged by soldiers. “They laughed all the time. Super sadistic,” she revealed, adding, “They took off my shirt, took pictures. Mistreated us all night long.”

Australian activist Juliet Lamont corroborated these grim testimonies, stating she was “tied with cables, water tortured and sexually assaulted.” She added that fellow detainees suffered “broken ribs, were tased in the face, and injected with unknown sedatives.” Online photos visibly depict activists with injuries consistent with these alleged beatings.

Brazilian activist Thiago Avila, previously detained by Israel, released a video alleging that activists were “raped” by Israeli soldiers, citing “many cases of sexual violence… on the prison boat, on the way to the port of Ashdod.”

Adalah unequivocally condemned Israel’s “entire operation,” labeling the raid on aid vessels in international waters as “unlawful” and the “systemic torture, humiliation, and arbitrary detention” of activists as “a flagrant violation of international law.”

The release of these activists comes amidst a wave of global outrage sparked by a widely circulated video. The footage showed far-right security minister Itamar Ben Gvir brazenly overseeing the humiliation and abuse of the detained flotilla participants, waving an Israeli flag as officers from the Israel Prison Service manhandled and forced activists to kneel. This shocking display drew condemnation from numerous world leaders, including officials from countries whose citizens were detained, with European Council President Antonio Costa expressing his “appalled” reaction. Several nations, including the UK, Italy, Spain, and France, summoned Israel’s charge d’affaires in protest.
