A significant potential memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States is poised to bring an end to the ongoing war on all fronts, Fajar news agency reported on Sunday. This crucial agreement encompasses a cessation of Israeli aggressions in Lebanon, alongside a firm commitment from Washington to waive sanctions on Iran’s vital oil sector during the negotiation period.
Should this pivotal agreement be finalized, the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a lifeline for global energy, will see a restoration of pre-war shipping levels within 30 days, rather than an immediate full return to its previous status, as emphasized by Fajar news agency. Iran, the agency further clarified, remains steadfast in asserting its sovereign rights over the Strait of Hormuz through various mechanisms, the specifics of which will be unveiled at a later date.
Furthermore, Iran is resolute in its demand for at least a partial release of its unjustly frozen assets. The prospective deal also includes a dedicated 60-day negotiation window concerning Iran’s peaceful nuclear program. Tehran unequivocally calls for the immediate lifting of the illegal US blockade on its ports, underscoring that no meaningful changes in the strait’s operations can occur while this oppressive blockade persists.
Any adjustments to navigation and transit through this critical international waterway are intrinsically linked to the full implementation of the United States’ other commitments outlined in the memorandum of understanding.
In a related development, US President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that an agreement with Iran to conclude the war was ‘largely negotiated’ and awaiting finalization. This significant breakthrough follows the recent visits of Pakistan army chief Asim Munir to Tehran, marking his second visit in recent weeks. A ceasefire for the conflict, which commenced on February 28, was initially brokered by Pakistan on April 8.
