India’s Historic Blow Against Global Drug Trafficking: First-Ever Captagon Seizure Valued at Rs182 Crore

In a significant victory against international drug syndicates, Indian anti-narcotics agencies have achieved a historic first-ever seizure of Captagon, a highly addictive psychotropic substance prevalent in the Middle East. The operation, spearheaded by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), led to the recovery of approximately 227.7 kilograms of Captagon, estimated to be worth Rs182 crore (approximately $21.8 million USD).

The Union Home Ministry confirmed the unprecedented seizure today, May 16th, revealing the dismantling of a sophisticated international network. Authorities successfully apprehended an overstaying Syrian national in Delhi, believed to be a key member of the illicit drug syndicate.

Unearthing a Transnational Operation

The breakthrough followed crucial intelligence from a foreign drug law enforcement agency, indicating India’s emerging role as a transit hub for Captagon trafficking. Acting on this information, NCB personnel raided a rented house in New Delhi on May 11th, uncovering approximately 31.5 kilograms of Captagon tablets ingeniously concealed within a ‘chapatti’ (roti) cutting machine. Preliminary investigations suggest this consignment was destined for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Further interrogation of the arrested Syrian national, who had illegally overstayed his tourist visa, led to a second major discovery. On May 14th, approximately 196.2 kilograms of Captagon powder were recovered from a container at the Container Facilitation Station (CFS) in Mundra, Gujarat. This container, declared as carrying sheep wool, had originated from Syria.

Captagon: A Growing Regional Threat

Captagon, primarily composed of Fenetylline and Amphetamine, is classified as a psychotropic substance under Indian law. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah underscored that the seized consignment was intended for transshipment to the Gulf region, particularly Saudi Arabia and neighboring Middle Eastern countries, where Captagon abuse has become a severe public health and law enforcement challenge.

This monumental seizure highlights a concerning trend: transnational drug syndicates are increasingly exploiting commercial cargo and containerized trade routes for trafficking narcotic substances across vast regions. This incident follows another recent recovery of 349 kilograms of cocaine from a container originating in Ecuador, signaling the escalating sophistication and reach of these criminal enterprises.

The NCB has launched a comprehensive investigation to meticulously identify the procurement sources, financial and hawala linkages, logistics facilitators, international receivers, and the broader transnational network associated with this dangerous drug syndicate. This resolute action by Indian authorities reaffirms their unwavering commitment to combating global drug trafficking and safeguarding public health and security.
