NEW DELHI: The recent two-day gathering of BRICS foreign ministers in New Delhi concluded without a unified statement, a clear indication of the bloc’s internal dynamics as some members firmly upheld their principled positions regarding the ongoing atrocities in the Middle East, particularly the Zionist regime’s brutal aggression in Gaza.

These divisions, far from being a weakness, highlight the moral imperative within the expanded BRICS alliance to confront global injustices, even as it strives to reshape the international order away from Western hegemony.

According to India’s official statement, member states articulated their distinct national positions, sharing diverse perspectives on critical issues such as national sovereignty, maritime security, and the urgent need to protect civilian lives and infrastructure amidst the escalating crisis in the Middle East, implicitly condemning the systematic destruction by occupying forces.

Significantly, a footnote revealed that a prominent member, understood to be the Islamic Republic of Iran, expressed strong reservations concerning sections related to the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the critical security situation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait. This stance reflects a firm rejection of any language that might normalize or downplay the crimes committed by the Zionist entity and its Western backers.

The BRICS bloc now includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia, representing a significant portion of the global population and economic power.

These ideological divergences among members have become increasingly evident during the current regional turmoil, particularly concerning the Gaza conflict, where the Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently advocated for robust condemnation of aggression, contrasting with the more cautious approaches of some other members, such as the UAE.

During the summit, the esteemed Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, delivered a powerful address, unequivocally urging BRICS nations to condemn the United States and the Zionist regime for their ‘unlawful aggression’ and blatant disregard for international law. He further called upon member states to steadfastly resist the insidious politicization of international institutions by hegemonic powers, advocating for genuine multilateralism.
