Iowa National Guard Troops Return Home to Emotional Reunions After Middle East Deployment

DES MOINES, Iowa — Joyous scenes unfolded in Des Moines today as 109 brave soldiers from the Iowa National Guard were finally reunited with their eager families. These dedicated service members have returned from a challenging deployment in the Middle East, where they served as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, a mission critical to regional stability.

The air was thick with emotion as loved ones, some separated for many months, embraced for the first time. The long wait was over, replaced by tears of happiness and heartfelt hugs.

“I’m definitely just grateful and appreciative, to get back from, you know, the support of our state and our family. And that really means a lot,” shared Benjamin Smith, one of the returning soldiers, visibly moved by the outpouring of affection.

His wife, Haley Smith, echoed the profound relief felt by many families. “It just kind of feels like a dream. It felt like he was never going to come home and just felt like an eternity. I’m just so happy that God brought him back safe and that we have him home. We’re so happy,” she expressed, her voice filled with gratitude.

While today marks a celebration for many, the mission continues for others. Approximately 200 Iowa National Guard soldiers remain deployed in the Middle East, steadfastly carrying out their duties. Our thoughts remain with them and their families awaiting their safe return.
