Beijing, China – China has called upon Pakistan to intensify its diplomatic efforts in mediating between Iran and the United States, urging Islamabad to play a crucial role in resolving regional tensions, particularly concerning the Strait of Hormuz. This appeal was made by China’s top diplomat, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during a recent conversation with his Pakistani counterpart, Ishaq Dar.
According to Chinese state media, Wang Yi emphasized the importance of Pakistan stepping up its mediation efforts to foster stability in the Middle East. He also highlighted the necessity of addressing issues related to the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil shipments.
The call comes as US President Donald Trump is anticipated to arrive in Beijing for high-level discussions with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. China maintains significant strategic and economic ties with Iran, positioning it as a key player in any regional diplomatic initiatives.
Wang Yi underscored China’s unwavering support for Pakistan’s mediating role, stating that Beijing would also contribute to these peace-building endeavors. Pakistan has increasingly emerged as a pivotal intermediary between Washington and Tehran, especially as both nations engage in negotiations following recent conflicts to achieve a lasting peace agreement.
However, the path to resolution remains complex. The Iranian government recently reiterated its stance, rejecting any amendments to its proposed terms, which US President Trump had previously dismissed as “garbage.” This highlights the significant diplomatic hurdles that mediators like Pakistan and China aim to overcome.
