In a significant shift amidst global uncertainties, consumers are increasingly turning to the expertise and reliability of traditional travel agents, a trend highlighted by a substantial surge in bookings and commissions across the sector.
Record Growth for Travel Consultants
The latest figures reveal a robust performance for travel consultants. Commissions for self-employed consultants saw a healthy 10.7% year-on-year increase last month. Elite franchisees within the network reported even more impressive gains, achieving commission rates exceeding 16% on individual bookings in April. Remarkably, several consultants recorded single-day bookings reaching five-figure sums, with individual sales surpassing £30,000.
Cruises and Long-Haul Destinations Lead the Way
The allure of cruise holidays continues to grow, with bookings climbing 39% compared to the same period last year. Cruises now constitute nearly one in five holidays sold across the network, underscoring their rising popularity.
Long-haul destinations also experienced substantial growth:
- Canada: up 90%
- Barbados: up 75%
- Australia: up 56%
- Thailand: up 27%
- United States: up 13%
Promotions and European Favorites Drive Demand
Specific promotions proved highly effective, such as P&O Cruises’ summer 2028 launch, which generated an astounding 854% booking uplift on its opening day. A Disney free dining and drinks promotion also contributed to a significant 416% year-on-year rise during the month.
European favorites also saw positive movement:
- Portugal: up 17%
- Italy: up 19%
- France: up 13%
- UK domestic holidays: up 22%
However, not all destinations fared equally, with Cyprus experiencing a 54% decline and Turkey down 25%.
Prioritizing Quality Over Price
The average booking value across the network increased by 12% compared to last year, a trend the company attributes to customers prioritizing quality and experience over mere price. This suggests a shift in consumer behavior towards seeking more value and security in their travel plans.
The Enduring Value of Trusted Expertise
Steve Witt, co-founder of NJT, commented on the challenging yet rewarding period: “April tested the resilience of the whole travel sector. However, we have paid out record amounts of commission to our consultants. It is indicative of their success and does not happen by accident, but by consistent focus on customer service and highlighting their value to potential clients.”
Witt further emphasized the critical role of human agents in uncertain times: “Our consultants are trusted, accessible and expert, and when the news is uncertain, customers want someone they can trust rather than booking directly and managing the risk themselves.” He concluded, “People assumed online booking and AI would eventually make agents obsolete. April shows the opposite. When the world feels more uncertain, the value of a trusted expert goes up.”
This resurgence underscores the irreplaceable value of human connection and expert guidance in the complex world of travel, especially when global events create a need for reassurance and personalized service.
