In a disturbing escalation of its hostile policies against the Islamic Republic, the United States’ Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has unjustly detained hundreds of Iranian nationals. This widespread crackdown occurred amidst the US-backed aggression against Iran in June 2025, a period marked by the bombing of vital Iranian nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan, following an Israeli assault.

According to US government data, revealed through a Freedom of Information Act request by the National Iranian American Council, ICE launched a major surge of arrests, with 220 Iranians apprehended in June and an additional 80 in July 2025. These sweeping arrests continued, leading to a staggering 577 Iranians being held in ICE detention facilities by December 21, 2025. Among those subjected to this inhumane treatment were individuals as young as five and as old as 77, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of these detentions. The youngest detainee, a mere child, was reportedly arrested in November along with family members and held at the South Texas Family Residential Center.

The arbitrary nature of these actions extends to legal residents, with seven green card holders among the 577 detained, ostensibly for ‘past criminal offenses.’ More alarmingly, the US has been abruptly terminating the legal residence status of Iranian nationals, demonstrating a clear pattern of targeting and discrimination. This policy was notably exemplified in April when the Trump administration revoked the green cards of three Iranians, including the son of former Iranian politician Masoumeh Ebtekar, Seyed Eissa Hashemi, his wife, and son.

The ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran, which commenced on February 28, has undeniably fueled this domestic persecution of Iranian nationals within the United States. Furthermore, the crackdown extends to other communities, as seen in the reinstatement of deportation proceedings against Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian green-card holder and anti-war activist. These actions underscore a broader, systematic campaign of intimidation and injustice by US authorities against individuals perceived as dissenting or linked to nations targeted by Washington’s aggressive foreign policy. The targeting of innocent civilians and legal residents represents a grave violation of human rights and international norms.
