Lastminute.com Leverages Late Bookings Amidst Middle East Tensions, Reports Strong Q1
The online travel agency (OTA) Lastminute.com has announced improved financial results for its first quarter, attributing a “competitive advantage” to its ability to capture late bookings following shifts in travel demand due to the Middle East conflict.
In its latest financial report, the company highlighted its strategic resilience: “With Middle Eastern geopolitical headwinds shifting demand, our multi-market European presence ensured resilience.”
Strategic Adaptability and Diversification:
The group emphasized its successful approach in navigating market changes:
- Leveraging both core and expansion markets.
- Offering a diversified product portfolio, including standalone flights, hotels, and packages.
This strategy allowed Lastminute.com to maintain its positive performance despite external pressures.
The brand’s name itself played a crucial role, providing a “competitive advantage in the late-booking window.” This enabled the platform to effectively capture demand for popular beach destinations such as Spain and Portugal, as well as major European cities, once initial booking hesitations subsided.
Financial Highlights:
Lastminute.com reported a robust 8% year-on-year increase in first-quarter revenue, reaching €96.4 million. Excluding the impact of a discontinued cruise business, the growth figure climbed to an impressive 9.7%.
This growth was primarily fueled by “sustained demand” and strong transaction volumes, particularly within the flights segment. The company also increased its targeted marketing investments, focusing on volume to effectively capture evolving consumer demand.
Adjusted earnings (EBITDA) saw a 6% rise, reaching €15.3 million. This “reflects solid profitability, despite cancellations and re-protections linked to the geopolitical situation in the Middle East,” according to the company.
While January and February marked a strong start to the year, March experienced a “softer” period, reflecting broader market and geopolitical volatility. Nevertheless, the overall performance remained positive and is reportedly ahead of projections for 2025.
Innovation and Future Outlook:
In a significant move for its AI strategy, Lastminute.com’s flight inventory went live in ChatGPT on OpenAI, signaling “tangible progress” in the group’s technological advancements.
The group reaffirmed its previously issued full-year financial guidance, anticipating approximately 10% growth in both revenue and adjusted earnings.
Chief executive Alessandro Petazzi commented on the results: “Our Q1 performance reflects the structural resilience of our business model and the continued demand for travel. We had a strong start to the year and our diverse presence across Europe has enabled us to respond to the evolving situation in the Middle East. We are well-positioned to benefit from the late booking trend and our wide-ranging product mix, flexible booking options and AI integration will stand us in good stead for the future.”
