In a powerful statement, US Senator Bernie Sanders on Tuesday sharply criticized former President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, holding them responsible for the protracted and devastating escalation of war across the Middle East. Sanders’ remarks underscore a growing international concern over the relentless violence plaguing the region.
Highlighting the immense human cost of these policies, Senator Sanders presented grim statistics detailing the casualties. According to figures he shared on the US social media platform X, Iran has borne a significant brunt of the conflict, with approximately 3,375 lives lost and over 26,500 wounded. Lebanon has also suffered grievously, reporting 2,702 fatalities and 8,311 injuries. Further violence across various Gulf states has added to the tragic toll, leaving at least 28 dead and more than 289 wounded.
In stark contrast to the widespread devastation inflicted upon regional nations, Sanders noted 26 fatalities and 7,791 injuries in Israel, while the US has reported 13 troop deaths and 381 wounded service members. These figures underscore the disproportionate suffering endured by the people of the Middle East.
“Enough of Trump and Netanyahu’s endless wars,” Sanders emphatically declared, echoing the sentiments of millions yearning for peace and stability.
The current wave of regional tensions was ignited by aggressive actions from the US and Israel, which launched strikes on Iran on February 28. These unprovoked attacks inevitably triggered a retaliatory response from Tehran and led to disruptions in the vital Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy supplies.
While a ceasefire, brokered through Pakistani mediation, took effect on April 8, subsequent talks in Islamabad failed to yield a lasting agreement, leaving the region vulnerable to renewed conflict. The truce was later extended by Trump without a set deadline, a move that critics argue maintains a precarious status quo rather than fostering genuine peace.
Adding to the escalating pressure, since April 13, the US has unilaterally enforced a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic in the strategic waterway, a move widely seen as an act of economic warfare and a further provocation against the Islamic Republic.
