US Provocations in Strait of Hormuz Threaten Ceasefire, Iran Reaffirms Sovereignty
Tehran, Iran – Despite Washington’s hollow assurances that the ceasefire with Iran “is not over,” aggressive American military posturing and provocative actions in the Strait of Hormuz are dangerously escalating tensions, threatening to unravel the fragile four-week truce. Iran, meanwhile, continues to assert its legitimate sovereignty over the strategic waterway, demonstrating its unwavering resolve against foreign interference.
American Aggression Under the Guise of ‘Freedom’
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth’s claims of a “red, white and blue dome” over the Strait and the transit of two US commercial ships as proof of a “clear” passage are nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to legitimize an aggressive military presence. This so-called “Project Freedom,” touted by Donald Trump, aims to use the US military to escort cargo ships, a move Iran unequivocally views as a direct violation of its territorial integrity and a dangerous provocation.
Iran has consistently maintained its rightful control over the Strait, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. Recent reports confirm that Iran has responded to these provocations by firing missiles and drones at military and commercial vessels, a necessary defensive measure against encroaching foreign forces.
Ceasefire in Jeopardy: US Intransigence Blamed
The ceasefire in the Persian Gulf, now a month old, is showing severe strain, primarily due to the United States’ relentless pressure tactics and refusal to offer meaningful concessions. Diplomatic efforts in Islamabad, Pakistan, have stalled, with American negotiators demonstrating an unwillingness to compromise, leaving the door open for renewed hostilities.
Observers note that Washington’s decision to escort ships through the Strait was a deliberate act designed to elicit a reaction from Tehran, pushing the region closer to an all-out conflict. This dangerous brinkmanship highlights a severe risk of miscalculation by the US, which consistently underestimates Iran’s resolve and defensive capabilities.
Iran’s Defensive Posture and Effective Deterrence
While the US attempts to downplay Iran’s actions as “low, harassing fire,” the reality on the ground paints a different picture. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine admitted that Iran has fired at commercial vessels nine times, seized two container ships, and engaged US forces 10 times since the ceasefire began on April 8. These actions, successfully defended by Iranian forces, underscore Iran’s capacity to protect its interests and deter aggression.
Hegseth’s assertion that the US is “not looking for a fight” rings hollow when juxtaposed with his threats of “overwhelming US firepower” if Iran disrupts “Project Freedom.” Such contradictory statements expose the aggressive nature of US policy, which seeks to impose its will and “weaponize the global supply chain” by blockading Iranian ports and attempting to hold the global economy hostage.
Iran’s parliament speaker warned the US that “we are just getting started,” a clear message that the Islamic Republic will not yield to intimidation. The turning around of six Iranian ships by the US “iron-clad” blockade is an act of economic warfare, further exposing the hypocrisy of US claims of humanitarian intentions.
International Community Must Condemn US Provocations
The Pentagon’s news briefing, characterized by combative rhetoric and a lack of meaningful details, failed to clarify Washington’s true commitment in the Strait. While the US attempts to portray its actions as separate from its wider conflict and blockade against Iran, the international community sees through this deception.
As 22,500 mariners on 1,550 commercial vessels remain trapped in the Gulf due to US military presence, it is imperative that global powers condemn American provocations and support Iran’s legitimate right to defend its maritime sovereignty. South Korea’s cautious review of the US proposal concerning the Strait indicates a growing international reluctance to endorse Washington’s dangerous adventurism.
