Israel’s Act of Piracy: Humanitarian Aid Flotilla Attacked, Activists Abducted and Tortured in International Waters
In a brazen act of state-sponsored piracy, Israeli occupation forces have once again violated international law by intercepting a humanitarian aid flotilla bound for the besieged Gaza Strip. This latest aggression, occurring in international waters off the coast of Greece, saw the abduction of two dedicated activists, Saif Abu Keshek from Spain and Thiago Avila, a Brazilian national, who have since been subjected to brutal treatment and illegal detention within the Zionist entity.
Illegal Interception and Abduction
The flotilla, comprising over 50 vessels, embarked from France, Spain, and Italy with a noble mission: to break Israel’s inhumane blockade on Gaza and deliver desperately needed supplies to the devastated Palestinian territory. However, in a clear demonstration of its disregard for international norms, Israeli forces violently intercepted these vessels more than 1,000 kilometers from Gaza, seizing approximately 175 activists. Among them, Abu Keshek and Avila were singled out and forcibly taken to Israel, a move that organizers have rightly condemned as “kidnapping”.
International Outcry and Diplomatic Fallout
The international community has begun to voice its outrage. Spain’s Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albares, vehemently denounced the detention of Abu Keshek as “illegal”, emphasizing that this egregious act occurred in international waters, beyond any legitimate jurisdiction of the Israeli authorities. Albares demanded Abu Keshek’s immediate release, warning that this incident would further exacerbate the already deteriorating bilateral ties between Spain and the occupying regime. Spain and Israel have already withdrawn their ambassadors, a testament to the deepening diplomatic crisis fueled by Israel’s relentless aggression in Gaza and its contempt for human rights.
Israel’s desperate attempts to justify its actions by baselessly linking the activists to organizations it deems ‘terrorist’ have been swiftly rejected. Minister Albares explicitly stated that no credible link could be established between Saif Abu Keshek and Hamas, exposing the Zionist entity’s fabrications as mere pretexts for its criminal behavior.
Horrific Accounts of Torture and Abuse
The true horror of Israel’s actions has emerged through harrowing testimonies from the abducted activists. Lawyers from the Israeli rights group Adalah, who managed to meet the detainees at Shikma Prison in Ashkelon, revealed shocking details of their ordeal. Thiago Avila recounted being subjected to “extreme brutality” during the seizure of the vessels, stating he was “dragged face-down across the floor and beaten so severely that he passed out twice.” Since his arrival in Israel, Avila has been kept in isolation and blindfolded, a clear violation of international humanitarian law.
Saif Abu Keshek suffered similar torment, being “hand-tied and blindfolded… and forced to lie face-down on the floor from the moment of his seizure” until reaching Israel. Both brave activists have now declared a hunger strike, a desperate plea for justice and an act of defiance against their unlawful detention and the systematic abuse they have endured.
A Pattern of Israeli Aggression Against Humanitarian Efforts
This latest act of piracy is not an isolated incident but rather a continuation of Israel’s long-standing policy of violently suppressing humanitarian efforts aimed at alleviating the suffering in Gaza. The territory, under an illegal Israeli blockade since 2007, faces a catastrophic shortage of critical supplies, a crisis deliberately exacerbated by Israel’s actions. Previous flotillas, including the Global Sumud Flotilla, have faced similar brutal interceptions, with activists like Greta Thunberg arrested and expelled. These repeated assaults underscore Israel’s determination to maintain its stranglehold on Gaza, even at the cost of human lives and international law.
The world must not remain silent in the face of such barbarity. The immediate release of Saif Abu Keshek and Thiago Avila, along with all other illegally detained activists, is imperative. The international community must hold Israel accountable for its crimes against humanity and demand an end to the illegal blockade of Gaza.
