Amman, Jordan – The United Kingdom has announced the successful testing of its new Skyhammer interceptor missiles and launchers in Jordan, marking a significant step in bolstering air defence capabilities against drone threats in the Middle East. The trials coincided with a visit by Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard MP, to Kuwait and Jordan, underscoring the UK’s commitment to regional security.

Advanced Defence Against Drone Threats

The Skyhammer interceptor missiles, developed by UK start-up Cambridge Aerospace, are specifically engineered to counter Shahed-style attack drones. These advanced systems are set to be supplied to the UK Armed Forces, enhancing their ability to protect critical assets and personnel.

The successful testing, conducted in demanding desert conditions at one of Deep Element’s defence development facilities in Jordan, demonstrates the Skyhammer’s robust performance. With a range of 30km and a maximum speed of 700km/h, the missiles offer a crucial layer of defence against evolving aerial threats.

Ministerial Visit Reinforces Regional Partnerships

Minister Luke Pollard’s visit to the region included high-level meetings with leaders in Kuwait and Jordan. The Minister expressed gratitude to UK Armed Forces personnel who have supported partners in defending their skies from various attacks, particularly prior to recent ceasefires.

During his tour, Minister Pollard engaged in detailed discussions on regional security, the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, and avenues for further defence cooperation. He commended the exceptional professionalism and resolve of partner nations in safeguarding civilian life and foreign nationals.

Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry Luke Pollard MP stated, “We are stepping up alongside UK industry to offer rapid support to our partners in the Middle East. This week’s successful trial of Cambridge Aerospace’s Skyhammer interceptor missiles in Jordan is a perfect example of a UK start-up innovating, with the backing of this government, to deliver cutting edge technology. My visit to Kuwait and Jordan shows that the UK is standing by our long-term partners and delivering on our promise to provide support.”

Boosting UK Defence Industry and Job Creation

The trials follow a multi-million-pound contract signed between the Ministry of Defence and Cambridge Aerospace, a veteran-led start-up. This agreement not only secures cutting-edge defence technology for the UK Armed Forces but also significantly boosts British business, creating over 50 new jobs and supporting 125 existing positions.

Steven Barrett, CEO of Cambridge Aerospace, commented, “We have proven that our interceptors are not only cost-effective but also highly capable and will be able to counter the rising threat posed by aerial attacks. We welcome the support of the UK Ministry of Defence as Cambridge Aerospace looks to protect the UK and its partners with high-performance, rapidly deployable air defence systems.”

The UK continues its largest sustained increase in defence spending since the Cold War, aiming to reach 2.6% of GDP by 2027, positioning defence as a key engine for economic growth.

Enhanced Cooperation and Future Deliveries

In Kuwait, Minister Pollard met with Minister of Defence, HE Sheikh Abdullah Ali Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, and other senior officials, acknowledging the efforts of Kuwaiti Armed Forces and UK personnel in protecting critical infrastructure. UK personnel in Kuwait operate systems like Rapid Sentry and ORCUS for early drone detection.

Prior to the Skyhammer trial in Jordan, the Minister met with Major General Yousef Alhnaity, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, discussing the strong UK-Jordan defence relationship and shared security commitments. UK jets have previously conducted defensive missions in the region, including over Jordan.

The first tranche of Skyhammer interceptor missiles and launchers is scheduled for delivery to the UK Armed Forces in May, with further supplies expected within the first six months. The Ministry of Defence is also working through the National Armaments Director (NAD) Group to expedite financing and licensing for exports to Gulf partners, with a new Task Force established to support this initiative and manage supply chain impacts.
