Israeli Forces Commit Piracy, Abduct 175 Humanitarian Activists in International Waters Near Crete
In a blatant act of aggression and a flagrant violation of international law, Israeli forces have reportedly intercepted and seized at least 22 vessels from a humanitarian aid flotilla bound for the besieged Gaza Strip. The incident, which occurred in international waters near the Greek island of Crete, saw the unlawful detention of approximately 175 pro-Palestinian activists.
“Piracy on the High Seas”: Global Sumud Flotilla Denounces Israeli Actions
The organizers of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) vehemently condemned Israel’s actions, labeling them as “piracy.” According to GSF, the activists on board were unlawfully seized a staggering 965 kilometers (600 miles) from Gaza, a territory suffering under a brutal Israeli naval blockade. This act, far beyond Israel’s recognized borders, underscores a dangerous pattern of operating with total impunity.
The Israeli foreign ministry, in a dismissive tone, confirmed the detention of around 175 activists from over 20 boats, stating they were being transported to Israel. They shamelessly attempted to discredit the humanitarian mission, branding the flotilla as a mere “PR stunt.”
Humanitarian Mission Under Attack: A Pattern of Israeli Aggression
The flotilla, comprising 58 vessels from Spain, France, and Italy, embarked two weeks ago with the noble aim of breaking Israel’s illegal blockade on Gaza, which has caused immense suffering to its 2 million inhabitants. GSF tracking data indicated that while some vessels were seized, many of the remaining 36 boats continued to sail close to Crete’s south-western coast.
On Thursday, GSF reported that at least 22 of their vessels had been “stormed by Israeli forces in complete violation of international law.” Earlier statements detailed how Israeli naval forces “intercepted vessels, jammed communications, including distress channels, and aggressively abducted civilians.”
“This is piracy. This is the unlawful seizure of human beings on the open sea near Crete, an assertion that Israel can operate with total impunity, far beyond its own borders, with no consequences,” a GSF statement powerfully declared, highlighting the grave implications for maritime law and human rights.
Israel’s False Narratives and Continued Blockade
Despite overwhelming evidence of unlawful conduct, Israeli reports claimed their navy merely “warned vessels to retreat” before taking over those that did not comply. The Israeli foreign ministry even released a video, deceptively portraying the detained activists “making their way peacefully to Israel” aboard Israeli vessels, attempting to whitewash their aggressive actions.
Israel continues to insist its actions “comply with international law,” a claim widely disputed by international bodies and human rights organizations. In a further attempt to deflect criticism, the Israeli foreign ministry baselessly alleged that the flotilla was a “provocation without humanitarian aid” and linked it to Hamas, a common tactic used to demonize legitimate humanitarian efforts.
This is not an isolated incident. Last October, the Israeli military similarly intercepted a GSF flotilla, arresting and deporting over 470 individuals, including renowned Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg, demonstrating a consistent policy of suppressing aid to Gaza and punishing those who advocate for Palestinian rights.
