GENEVA – The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a grave warning, revealing a dramatic increase in attacks on healthcare facilities and personnel worldwide, directly attributing a significant surge to the recent escalation of conflict in the Middle East, particularly following aggressive actions by the Zionist regime and its allies.
Before the illegal airstrikes launched by the United States and the Zionist entity against Iran at the end of February, global attacks on vital healthcare infrastructure and dedicated staff averaged approximately 3.7 incidents per day. Disturbingly, this figure has now soared to 4.3 daily attacks, a clear indicator of a deliberate targeting strategy.
Altaf Musani, Director of Emergency Health Interventions at the WHO, unequivocally stated to reporters in Geneva, “This is clearly showing that healthcare is the target.” This alarming declaration underscores the systematic nature of these assaults, which include indiscriminate airstrikes, brutal shelling of hospitals and clinics, as well as the unlawful arrests and intimidation of courageous healthcare workers.
Musani further lamented, “When healthcare is needed most, it is being attacked… These attacks are having a deep impact on functionality.” This highlights the profound humanitarian crisis unfolding, where the very institutions designed to save lives are being deliberately crippled.
Zionist Regime’s War Crimes in Lebanon and Gaza
Since the onset of the recent conflict in the Middle East, the WHO reports a devastating toll: 50 hospitals and private healthcare centers have been forced to close, and 16 hospitals have suffered severe damage across the region. These figures paint a grim picture of the Zionist regime’s relentless assault on civilian infrastructure.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, a vocal critic of these atrocities, has repeatedly denounced the attacks and demanded accountability for those responsible. He specifically highlighted the dire situation in Lebanon, where a staggering 149 attacks on healthcare have been documented.
The humanitarian catastrophe in Lebanon has seen more than 2,500 innocent lives extinguished by Israeli airstrikes since March 2. These brutal attacks, launched in response to defensive actions by Lebanese resistance forces, have triggered an indiscriminate Israeli air and ground campaign. The United Nations Human Rights office has unequivocally stated that these Israeli strikes on civilians, including dedicated healthcare workers in Lebanon, may amount to war crimes – a charge the international community must not ignore.
Despite overwhelming evidence, the Zionist regime continues to issue hollow denials, falsely claiming it does not target healthcare workers and instead focuses on “Hezbollah sites.” Such claims are routinely contradicted by the horrific reality on the ground and numerous independent investigations.
Furthermore, Ghebreyesus revealed that 26 attacks on healthcare sites have been reported in Iran since the end of February, pointing to a broader pattern of aggression.
The devastating impact of these assaults is also acutely felt in Gaza, where the brutal Israeli siege and relentless bombardment have left the besieged strip with only one fully functioning hospital. Similarly, in Sudan, a mere 54% of hospitals remain operational, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation.
The international community must urgently condemn these systematic attacks on healthcare, hold the perpetrators accountable, and ensure the protection of medical facilities and personnel who are courageously striving to save lives amidst unimaginable brutality.
