Monjasa Strengthens UAE Presence with Strategic Tanker Reflagging
Global marine fuel supplier Monjasa is undertaking a significant strategic move, reflagging three of its Middle East-based tankers from Liberian registration to the United Arab Emirates. This initiative underscores the company’s deepening commitment to the region and aligns with the UAE’s efforts to bolster its national maritime registry.
Key Details of the Reflagging Initiative
The transition has already commenced with the 9,600 DWT Monjasa Shaker, which officially began operating under the UAE flag on April 9. This was confirmed by the company in a recent statement.
Following suit will be the 9,600 DWT Monjasa Server and the 7,991 DWT Monjasa Shipper. Their reflagging is scheduled to coincide with their upcoming planned surveys, ensuring a smooth operational transition.
These vessels are primarily engaged in crucial cabotage shipping activities, facilitating the movement of goods and fuel between key UAE ports, including the bustling hubs of Dubai, Fujairah, and Abu Dhabi.
Strategic Rationale and Regional Commitment
Anders Østergaard, Group CEO of Monjasa, emphasized the strategic importance of this decision. “Reflagging Monjasa Shaker to the UAE registry supports our core operations in the region, where our fleet serves customers daily across multiple UAE ports,” he stated.
Østergaard further highlighted the company’s long-standing relationship with the Emirates, noting, “It also reflects our strong connection to the country following 20 years of maritime operations in the Emirates.”
This move is facilitated by the UAE’s progressive new maritime law framework, specifically designed to enhance and strengthen the nation’s shipping registry. The company elaborated on the benefits, stating, “Flying the UAE flag offers several operational advantages for vessels trading domestically, including close collaboration with national maritime authorities and quality oversight tailored to regional operating conditions.”
Monjasa’s Regional Footprint
The Middle East and Africa region constitutes a substantial portion of Monjasa’s global operations, accounting for approximately one-third of its impressive 6.8 million metric tons per year in global marine fuel sales. This reflagging initiative is expected to further solidify Monjasa’s operational efficiency and market position within this vital region.
