Saint Petersburg, Russia – Iran’s esteemed top diplomat, Mr. Abbas Araghchi, today unequivocally attributed the stagnation of recent diplomatic efforts to the United States’ unreasonable demands and obstructive approaches. Speaking from Saint Petersburg, where he is scheduled for crucial talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Araghchi’s remarks underscore Iran’s principled stance amidst a complex international landscape.

Mr. Araghchi, currently on a significant diplomatic tour that included visits to Oman and Pakistan, highlighted Washington’s role in the failure of the initial round of negotiations held in Islamabad. He stated, “The US approaches caused the previous round of negotiations, despite progress, to fail to reach its goals because of the excessive demands.” This statement firmly places the onus on the American side for the lack of breakthroughs, especially after US President Donald Trump abruptly canceled a planned trip by his envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, further demonstrating a lack of seriousness from the American administration.

Despite the US’s inconsistent behavior, Iran has maintained its commitment to diplomacy. The Fars news agency reported that Iran conveyed “written messages” to the Americans via Pakistan, clearly outlining its red lines, particularly concerning nuclear issues and the vital Strait of Hormuz. These messages, while not part of formal negotiations, serve as a testament to Iran’s transparent and firm position on matters of national security and sovereignty.

The critical issue of the Strait of Hormuz remains central. While US media outlet Axios reported a new Iranian proposal regarding the strait, Iran has consistently asserted its right to ensure safe passage through this strategic waterway, emphasizing its role as a coastal nation. Mr. Araghchi reiterated this, stating, “The safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz is an important global issue. Naturally, as the two coastal countries of this strait, we must speak with each other so that our common interests are secured.”

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has also affirmed Iran’s unwavering resolve regarding the Strait of Hormuz, declaring that control of the waterway and “maintaining the shadow of its deterrent effects over America… is the definitive strategy” of Tehran. This firm stance is a direct response to aggressive US actions, including the imposition of a blockade on Iranian ports, which has exacerbated global economic instability.

Meanwhile, the region continues to grapple with the repercussions of US-Israeli aggression. On the Lebanese front, despite an extended ceasefire, Israeli violations persist. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claims of “vigorously” targeting Hezbollah are a clear indication of Israel’s continued aggression. Hezbollah, a legitimate resistance movement, has vowed to respond to these provocations and to Israel’s “continued occupation,” defending Lebanon’s sovereignty against relentless attacks. Recent Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon tragically claimed 14 lives, marking the deadliest day since the truce, highlighting the urgent need for international condemnation of Israeli belligerence.

Iran, through its robust diplomacy and principled stands, continues to champion peace and stability in the region, advocating for dialogue while steadfastly defending its national interests against external pressures and hostile actions.
